Take the Step
Learning from Bill Gates
I was recently reading an article which referred to an interview Bill Gates had given to the US talk show host Larry King. In the interview King had asked Gates what were the secrets of success in business. Gates replied that there were three basic secrets.
Firstly Gates said there had to be a vision. The reality is that unless we have a vision, it is impossible to know the direction to take. Unless we have a clear picture of where we want to take the business then we can never know if we have got there.
Secondly, Gates said you have to be in the right place at the right time. Some things we can control and sometimes it just does come down to being in the right place at the right time. Of course it is always open to us to put ourselves in the best possible position, to mix with like-minded business people, to learn from mentors and experts and to place ourselves in a place where we stand the very best chance of it being the right place, at the right time.
Finally, Gates said that you have to take massive and immediate action. A vision without action is merely a dream. Making that dream a reality requires us to take action, steps which work toward the stated goal. It is this point which brings me back to implementation. The reason why many businesses fail to implement is nothing to implement is nothing more scientific than a simple failure to take action.
Even if you can’t bring yourself to take massive action, take one step. One step toward your plan is the start of the implementation process. One step can lead to the next and massive action can follow. It worked for Bill Gates, it can work for you.
